Click here to check out a widely read paper by Qifan Xiao in the group that challenges the chemistry community to quit using the ambiguous and misleading terms “pi stacking” and “pi-pi stacking” to describe the interactions of aromatic molecules. Instead, we introduce the idea of a standardized and more precise language using EDDIE (Electrostatic, Dispersion, Desolation, Induction and Exchange Repulsion) to describe the interactions of all molecules, including aromatics.
Click here to read a press release about our work from graduate student Matthew Levine with the Sessler lab published in PNAS that reported a surprising finding: Professor Jonathan Sessler’s gold complex was not only cytotoxic to cancer cells, it also mimics a viral infection so the host immune system attacks the cancer. This potential breakthrough could usher in a new way to create more effective treatments with fewer side effects and better outcomes.
Click here to check out this SciTube video that was created to illustrate our work with the YESS 2.0 system that correctly predicted minimal resistance was going to emerge even after several years of using the antiviral Paxlovid to treat COVID-19.

Dr. Rasha Yaghi published an important manuscript that described the complete analysis of Mpro, the protease from COVID-19 that is also the target of the widely used anti-viral drug Paxlovid. This work represents the highest resolution profiling ever accomplished for a protease. Additionally, we also carried out a comprehensive analysis of resistance to Paxlovid and found it is unlikely to lose potency due to evolved resistance.
